Jeno Hubay, born Jeno Huber, was known as one of the foremost violin educators of the late 19th century, teaching a variety of well known violinists as well as musicians who gained fame in other areas.
As a composer, Hubay was best known for short pieces that were often used as encores, though he also composed four concertos and a number of operas. This Elegy (Op. 14, No. 1) is a short work of a lyrical nature that is part of a set of three short works. Both the original violin version and the transcription for viola are available.
